Hair Thining And Premature Greying Treatment

Hair Thining

These three terms are often used in the same breath when talking about thinning hair. However, they each mean something different.

Thin hair
Thin hair means there are a small number of hair follicles on the scalp.

Fine hair
Here the actual diameter of the hair strands are normally smaller, making them appears ‘fine’. Hairs that are coarse have wider, ‘thicker’ hair.

Thinning hair
When hair is thinning, it means that the scalp is in the process of losing hair. This can be due to a variety of conditions but is commonest in pattern baldness – male / female.

When hair "thins," the hair become smaller and smaller in diameter, it miniaturizes. Patients with thinning, retain the same number of hair per square inch as they did originally. But, as each hair gets progressively smaller, the scalp skin becomes more and more visible. Thinning is a slow process, and it’s unusual to see an increased number of hair in the sink or hair brush.

Thinning of hair becomes noticeable only when at least 25% of it is lost.

Premature Greying of Hair

The hair has a tendency to lose its natural color with advancing age and turn grey, but premature Greying is a morbid condition and it makes even the young look older. When hair starts loosing its color prior to 35 years, it is referred to as premature Greying. Premature Greying is also said to have set in when >50% of hair grey by the age of 40 years.

Treatment Options
The effectiveness of medications used to treat alopecia depends on the cause of hair loss, extent of the loss and individual response. Generally, treatment is less effective for more extensive cases of hair loss.

Treatment option can be categorized as follows

1.Anti-androgens – Finasteride , Saw Palmetto
2.Vasodilators - Minoxidil
3.Double Action( Anti-androgen+ Vasodilators )
4.Hair matrix cell activator
5.Hair Procedure – Hair Transplants or Hair Replacement
6.Nutritional Supplements

Anti-Androgens

Anti-androgens are designed to affect the hormone made in the adrenal glands they don’t stop the hormone from being made, but they stop them from having an effect leading to hair loss

Vasodilators
As DHT accumulates in the hair follicles & roots constricting the blood supply of oxygen & nutrients to the hair roots, vasodilators (Minoxidil) dilates blood vessels in the scalp & sustains the hair follicles for longer period of time.

Double Action (Anti –Androgen + Vasodilators
Anti-androgens target the problem of DHT binding to androgen receptors & prevent follicle miniaturization & vasodilators like minoxidil causes vasodilation & therefore improve supply of oxygen & nutrients to hair follicles & roots

Hair Matrix Cell Activator
Hair matrix cell activator is a substance that acts at matrix cells in the hair follicle preventing degradation

Hair Transplantation
Hair transplantation is a surgical technique that involves moving individual hair follicles from one part of the body (the donor site) to bald or balding parts (the recipient site). It is primarily used to treat male hair baldness.

Nutritional Supplements
After a period of rest the follicle undergoes through a identical process of formation during this process metabolic requirement of the hair cells should be met .This means that certain vitamins & minerals must be provided in adequate proportions.
